Epidural & pitocin used

Julie
I had my baby Feb 4, my birth story starts the night before. I was hunched over working on a painting for her for hours that night, which caused cramping. It felt like period cramps. I went to bed and experienced it all night, when I woke up I had my "bloody mucous plug" fall out. I told my husband let's go to l&d just to get looked at before he goes to work. We got there and I was only about 2 cm dilated, but 80% thinned. The nurse told me I had been prelaboring all night and my contractions were close enough together that I could go home and wait for my water to break or get the doc to break it and get pitocin if my contractions didn't cause me to dilate more in the next hour. Before going in I knew I didn't want to pitocen from stories from others. However, I wasn't progressing and we didn't want to go home and wait and risk him being at work and unable to get back in time. So he called in, I had the doc break my water, and I got a very small amount of pitocen drip. The cramps weren't bad until the water broke, them they were bad! I made it to 6 cm dilated before wanting the epidural, the contractions had me feeling like I'd pass out! Unfortunately with scoliosis as bad as it is, it took 3 epidurals and over an hour for her to place it!! It is SO HARD to sit still that long through contractions and painful huge needles! But once it was in, I felt much better of course. I delivered her only 30 minutes after I began pushing. I was only in labor after my water broke for 4 hours (so no, it was a myth for me that pitocin/epidural while cause me to labor for longer). She came so quickly! And also, I didn't even tear except a tiny bit on the inside. Recovery was easy, also. I was able to move and walk and feel everything very quickly after, and it wasn't that painful. The worst part was peeing-- it burnt really bad! So there's my birth story ❤️ Fiona Oakley, Feb 4, 10 pm
