Treating bronchiolitis

Saranya

My 8 month old is suffering from bronchiolitis. She started showing symptoms of sickness (mild congestion, cough) last Saturday. We thought it was a common cold, called her doctor on Sunday. Then she developed fever on Monday and we took her to Urgent Care, where they diagnosed a ear infection and prescribed antibiotics. She started coughing up phlegm on Monday night and started eating poorly (around 50% of her daily intake). We kept feeding her small quantities frequently and she seemed to be in good spirits.

Then Tuesday night, she started coughing non stop violently for 15 mins, spitting up her entire feeding in the process. Since then, it's been a struggle to feed her and keep the food in.

We are spoon feeding her rice cereal mixed with formula and Pedialyte as she is finding it very difficult to nurse/take the bottle. We also take her to the hot shower to relieve congestion, apply Vicks Baby Rub on her chest, run a humidifier in her room, suction after saline spray to her nose, etc.

Her paediatrician says this is common and to keep doing what we are doing right now.

It breaks my heart to hear her cough and struggle to feed. I feel so guilty having food when she is unable to feed well. I'm also nervous about how she'll be able to breathe at night.

When does it improve? How do I help her? How did you get through this?
