How do you tell the difference?

How do you ladies tell the difference between clots and discharge when you are bleeding? I'm 7.5 weeks and have been having spotting since March 30th. It's gotten heavier and is almost black and I can't tell if I am seeing clots or discharge colored by the blood... I have a photo but will spare you all. Hubs wants to go to the ER but I'm not sure...

Update: Just got home from the ER. HCG looks good, baby is measuring exactly on time and heart rate is 157. Guess they just want to try to give mommy and daddy a heart attack before we even make it to the second trimester. lol We lost our first baby in December so this is very stressful but we are hoping for the best!

You definitely need to go to the ER. That sounds like a miscarriage

When I had spotting vs clots with my miscarriage - spotting and discharge would kind of soak into the panty liner. Whereas actual clots were like globs that just sat there. 
Regardless, you definitely need to see your doctor or pay a visit to the ER. If you are miscarrying, there is little they can do. But if you are not, it would be helpful to find out the cause of your spotting.

My clots have been very dark red and jelly like.  They stay together whereas discharge will break apart when flushed
