Ovulation is key, not your period. It all depends on when you ovulate (release an egg). If you have sex within about a week of when you ovulate there's a high chance you could get pregnant. Not every ovulates within the average range (12-14 days before their next period), so you need to track your ovulation through physical methods (tracking CM, CP, BBT, and LH surge) to know when YOU normally ovulate. If you don't know when you ovulate from tracking it with physical methods, then you shouldn't assume you're "safe" at any point in your cycle (if you're TTA).
