Should teachers get tenure?

Tenure is just the right to due process. It simply means you can't fire them on a whim without a proper investigation. It also keeps them from losing their jobs when schools change, as that isn't their fault. Instead of trying to take tenure from teachers, people should be more focused on unionize for themselves, their own jobs/careers and focusing on creating their own job security. Unfortunately, American society focuses on ruining things for others as opposed to improving overall systems

Why do the ppl using this app constantly insist on ruining positive things for others as opposed to dealing with individuals? If you, your spouse, or your child has a shitty instructor, it is YOUR/their responsibility to bring that up to administration and document it. Then that individual will be dealt with, but to remove job safety and the right to due process for everyone else in that field is absurd.

In universities, no. My husband is a college student and has had some good teachers that love their jobs and want to help, but the ones who were a zillion years old, didn't do anything online (meaning the class was really inconvenient compared to others), didn't want to help, wouldn't answer emails or ever actually be in their offices during their scheduled office time, had tenure. 
I just think it's a stupid concept in general, all teachers should be routinely evaluated. I had some awful teachers in k-12 too and they weren't tenured but never got fired either. Just kept on being shitty teachers. So I know tenure just protects teachers like that if we don't even get rid of the ones who aren't tenured

I'm in academia (at least for the time being) and it's obvious to me that many people just abuse the tenure system. Many of the professors in my department over 70-80 don't take graduate students and don't teach classes...they just sit around preventing the other experimentalists from using the multimillion dollar equipment that they haven't used in 30 years. Tenure protects bad professors, not good ones.

Absolutely!
It protects districts from firing teachers who have been there for many years(so rheybewrn more) when budget cuts happen. 
In the district I'm in you work for 3 years and prove yourself before you get tenure.

I think it depends. Obviously they have to prove they deserve it, but I think they should still be evaluated after they get it. That way teachers can't just get to the 'protected' part and then stop caring about teaching or helping their students, they have to keep proving that they're worth it.

At my university professors get Tenure after 10 years of good service. For the first 10 they're evaluated and observed by the departments. I found that teachers with tenure are more unwilling to help students out. When I have professors who haven't been here to get their tenure who will reach out to help in anyway possible. I think professors stop trying when they gain tenure. If your a good professor you shouldn't be worried about getting fired anyways.
