Getting started on trying to conceive

My period can be irregular without birth control but can regulate itself for 2-3 months after stopping birth control . Any way I can try to regulate it without birth control ? I'm trying to conceive with my boyfriend and also wanna know what I should buy to start pin pointing when we need to try ?
