How much does having an IUD inserted hurt?

I'm having my first copper IUD put in next week, and I'm just wondering how much it hurts? I've read some reviews saying that it's like minor cramps and other saying that it hurts extremely bad. So I'm just wondering what some other people's experiences with them are. And also is anyone has had them fall out?

It was so painful and I cried. The worse part is if your uterus moves they have to grab it with these sharp things and it hurts so bad

It didn't hurt at all for me. It was just like a regular gynecologist appointment where they put the speculum in you. It was slightly uncomfortable, but not painful, and it was over in a minute. I had light cramps and very light bleeding for 1-3 days, but that was it. I've had it for 7 years now.

It really depends on your body. If you're used to having cramps during your period it may not be much worse than that. If you're not prone to getting monthly cramps it may hurt more if you're not used to the sensation. I took some ibuprofen beforehand and I was on my period which helps the doc with opening the cervix which is the part that can hurt for some, and likely hurts more when you're not on your period. I've had pretty bad cramping on and off for the past two days or so but nothing as painful as the day of the insertion. It definitely won't be comfortable but it shouldn't be horrific. I was super nervous about getting my mirena inserted and it's been a tough few days but the cramping has started to let up. Remember, how long cramps last and how bad they may be will vary from person to person, and it'll take a while for your body to adjust. Just be patient, and be vigilant of any odd symptoms.

I just got my IUD three weeks ago. It honestly depends on your pain tolerance. It felt like a minor cramp for a second with the tools but once they took them out I was fine. I have a high pain tolerance as well. My friend got hers before me and she was in a lot of pain, but she has a low pain tolerance. We both had cramping a few days to a week afterwards but that's about it. I hope this helped. Remember to drink lots of water the day of as well it will help with the dizziness after the procedure.

I took 800mg of ibuprofen prior to the appointment. When the doctor placed the iud, it wasn't painful, instead an uncomfortable pressure that lasted for 10 seconds. I spotted for 2 days afterwards. Good luck!

It's a combination of things. Some doctors do things to help minimize the pain. I have a pretty high pain tolerance. I've had a few surgeries with no meds after and been okay, but that IUD hurt like a mofo.
