Should she pay?

My friend and I were talking about a situation that occurred on her old college campus and had different views:

One roommate left for her class. The second roommate left for class after the first, and left the door both unlocked and wide open. Somebody walked in and stole the first roommate's laptop, and she demanded that the second roommate pay to replace the laptop. Do you agree?

I don't know. I can tell you I'd be pissed my roommate left the door open, seriously?!? How hard is it to close a damn door?

The last to leave should always lock the door. Yes she should pay, AND also report it to the school, or building manager person.

Yeah at least half. It's partly the owners responsibility for leaving in attended in general. And the room mates responsibility because the lame brain left the door open. There's always a price for a mistake🤷🏻‍♀️

Also idk if renters insurance qualifies for students in a dorm but if it does that may be a better option for the future

Unless the second roommate is the one who stole the laptop, no she shouldn't have to pay. Yes, it was her fault for not locking the door but if someone wanted it bad enough, they'd have broken in anyhow.

I agree that the second roommate was negligent, but ultimately, it wasn't her who stole the laptop and it was a mistake. I don't think she should shoulder all the blame.

Thats why u always get renters insurance. And yes she should contribute atleast half.

I would check to see if the laptop was covered under the parent's home or renters insurance plan and then see if the school would cover it or if there is a policy around this. Otherwise sorry but roommate 1 is SOL same as they would be if there is a fire.
