Babys surname?

Hi guys,

Just looking for some opinions, my boyfriend and I have been together almost two years and our expecting our little bear in 2 weeks, we're not married and don't get me wrong as much as I love him I'm just not 100% sure if we will be married and spend our lives together... should this affect my decision on what surname the baby should have? He will always be this babies father of course, but I just don't know. I took my mothers name and her and my father split up when I was 3, not having my fathers second name never made me question who my father was and I have an amazing relationship with everyone on his side of the family. What do you all think?

I think ultimately it's up to you the 2 of you to decide. I am very traditional and I think that if it were me, as long as the father is in the picture and wants to be a part of his child's life, then I would choose to give the dads last name. My mother and father divorced when I was very young, I had my dad's last, until I got married of course, and i never thought twice about that. Now if my dad wasn't in the picture, then I wouldn't have liked to have his last name.

I'd say you need to involve your boyfriend in this decision and just decide what's right for you both. And don't feel anxious that the decision is final and forever, you can always change the surname later in your child's life if it turns out that another option seems right.

when my daughter was born i put her in my surname because at the time we weren't married and i'd seen so many couples split because of various issues.
we finally married when she was 11 months old.
i feel kinda bad because she'll have her birth certificate and a deedpoll to prove her legal name whereas our son is automatically having his dads.

I always assumed my children would have my surname regardless as I wouldn't change my name with marriage. But in the end, I realised that my daughter's  father's last name sounded much better with her first name so we went with that. There's no right or wrong choice here, and whatever you decide will be ok.

I think you should go with what would be best for your situation. I'm married, but I kept my last name. It's important my children have my last name somehow, but my husband would prefer them to only have one last name. We decided our baby will have my last name as a second middle name, and then his last name. It seemed a good compromise without hyphenating names.
