Do you think the first 24 hours after birth should just be spent with partner and baby?

Me and my partner think that our initial bond with the baby is so important. We want lots of skin to skin contact. We want time to wrap our heads around the start of our new life. We'll be bombarded with midwives, doctors and nurses whilst in hospital (for three days) we just don't want to have loads of family over too. 
We're only asking for 24 hours, is that too much to ask? We told both our parents and my grandparents and no one was happy about it!

I don't think it has to be but I respect anyone who wants to have the first 24 with just their SO

We asked for no visitors in the hospital period. Our families were there with our son waiting for baby, so we spent an hour just us with our new baby, then an hour with just our nuclear family, and then let everyone meet her for about an hour and then sent everyone home and asked for no visitors for about 48 hours. It's been great.

In Ireland you are only allowed one person in the ward and it's Your partner or otherwise a person that you choose and only they are allowed in the whole time you're in hospital. You're not allowed any visitors at all! It's handy because I'm not able for visitors but it's a bit annoying cuz I would like my mum and dad to come see me!

You don't have to tell anyone you're going to the hospital. Just go, deliver, and after the 24 hours let people know.
