What it sounds like to me is the ex is flirting with your SO.  Now that does not mean he is doing anything wrong, unless he is encouraging  it or flirting back.  For me, as long as there seems nothing else going on, i would just make it a point of always being with your SO whenever he has to meet his ex.  Also tell him from now on you want to know whenever she does something like that, cuz his hiding it make him look guilty.
