Teach a man to kiss????

So I've seen some suggestions from other people saying that when your boyfriend is a messy kisser (meaning wet & sloppy) but you don't want to hurt his feelings you can tell him things like "slow down" or "like this". This hasn't been working for me so I was wondering how to get the point across without being rude. (Please don't say to leave him because I love him so very much.)
