Do you really know what Fat Shaming is? If so, define it with examples please

I've seen some posts that can be considered fat shaming and some discussion on what it is and isn't. Let's talk about it!

Fat shaming is the implicit or explicit disapproval of something a person does, when the viewer has judged them to be "too fat" by whatever arbitrary standard they're using at that moment.

What a person does is often "existing while being fat".

Fat shaming isn't a function of how fat someone is; it's a subjective response based on the viewer's unconscious bias of "fat = moral failing" and their own perceived superiority or authority. People can be fat shamed at any weight.

It's sometimes as blatant as screeching insults at someone walking down the street, and as subtle as giving someone a dieting magazine with some ignorant platitudes about their health.

Fat shaming is your pretending to have false concern over a strangers health and so they try to justify their existence to what suits your view of societal normal

Well, it's making fun of someone who is deemed overweight. For example, seeing someone at a fast food place and making fun of them, or seeing a photo of someone bigger and saying they need to lose weight

Did you ever chuckle to yourself when the person in line in front of you orders a Big Mac and a diet soda? That's fat shaming. How about thinking to yourself 'she definitely shouldn't be wearing those leggings!' Again, fat shaming. What about mentioning the salads on a menu while out to lunch with a bigger friend after they said they're ordering a pizza? Or anytime you say something like 'if they don't like paying more for clothes or extra seats on an airplane, they should loose weight!' One of my personal favorites is when someone who is clearly on the smaller end of the spectrum, eats a big meal and says 'ughhh I'm so fat' 🙄

It's real, i'm not obese but my mom is. She started out at almost 400 pounds and is down below 290.. she still gets dirty looks when she goes to the gym.. like fat people shouldnt work out and make themselves better 🙄😒

Fat shaming can be in many different lights. It can be from the words we use, the lack of size options found in clothing stores, the over pricing of those clothes, our facial expressions and other nonverbals, and lack of representation of these individuals in a POSTIVE light and not seen as a comedic value.
