Is dating someone 3-4 years older than you okay? (read description)

Okay so there's this guy that I like, he's basically my best friend and I can tell him anything. He has told me that he likes me and he'll always be there for me whether or not I want to be in a relationship with him. I honestly love him to death but I don't know if it's a completely smart idea to date him. I'm 16 (turning 17 in August) and he just turned 20 in February. I don't know what to do.

I think it depends on the situation. For example, my Aunty is in a great marriage to a very kind man who is ten years older than her and they have a very happy family. In their case the age gap didn't matter because they are adults but if it was a teenage girl I don't think it would be as appropriate.
