walk me through the glucose testing process please

My next appt I will be having the glucose test done to test for gestational diabetes. Do they have to draw your blood and if so how many times? What did you do to pass the time. My doctor said it would take 3 hours. How long till you can eat? Can I take snacks in my purse for after I swallow the drink?
