Is taking the garbage to the dumpster alone child neglect?

I live in an apartment complex. I am a single mom. The garbage dumpster is a half block away. I get us home at 5:30 or 6 if I grocery shop. I heat up food then do bedtime at 6:30 pm. I shower, clean, pack for next say, do hw then sleep. If I lock my door and go take out the trash with baby in crib is that neglect? I do have portable video monitor. I have been putting the trash in the front seat of my car and driving to the dumpster in morning but it smells and some mornings I have no time because I have to get gas.

I wouldn't use the word 'neglect'....But in some situations it could be 'risky.'

I just asked my so his opinion on this.. and he said it's not that it's neglectful, but it's dangerous. Creeps and predators watch patterns and if someone knew your baby was alone it's risky. Plus, if god forbid something Happened to you while you were gone for that few minutes your babe is all alone.. being a single parent must be so tough and I'm sure you're doing a great job. Not intended to put you down at all, just giving another opinion

This could really go either way, but then I think if you are using the video monitor how is it any different than doing yard work while baby is napping? If round trip is no longer than 10 minutes, I think it should be fine.

I've seen people put the garbage bag on the hood of the car or on top of the car, if that's any help lol

I do this when I check my mail!!!! Out mailboxes are just down the street so I'm not even gone for like 5 minutes and I lock the doors and take the monitor but sometimes I feel guilty about it too.

I would just build it into part of your routine, get a baby carrier so hands are free and you are safer(can hold a hand rail ect.) do it after you get home on in the am while the coffee pot is brewing.

But I wouldn't say it's neglect. I leave my daughter to play in her crib while I shower or do laundry two floors away. But I see your SO's opinion. Some apartments have a service where you put it outside your door, do you have a young neighbor boy you could pay a buck a bag? Just some options!

I think as long as you know baby is in a safe place so even if they were to wake up they couldn't come to any harm and if you have a video monitor then even better! Neglect is a strong word, you would not be neglecting any of their needs if they were happy, safe and asleep
