Valementous cord insertion?

Anyone out there have it? What has your doctor told you about it?

It was explained to me at my 20 week ultrasound that I have VCI. My doctor said that the umbilical cord was not located on the placenta, but   that it was about 4 cm away from it and connected to the placenta by a series of veins. He said that because of this, the umbilical cord was not protected by the jelly like substance that would normally be there. This increases the risk of the cord rupturing. Other risks include preterm labor, low birthweight, and delivery by c-section. It all sounded very scary to me, but my doctor reassured me that the veins connected to the placenta were not blocking my cervix (which would be very dangerous) and that he felt all would be ok. The doctor really didn't seem overly concerned. He did say that he would be monitoring me a little more closely throughout the remainder of my pregnancy. He said that most VCIs weren't detected until labor, and that it was very good that we found out this early. I was told that it wasn't necessary for me to make any changes because of the VCI. Believe me, I know it's frightening to hear something is abnormal. But, I feel confident in the information that my doctor gave me and I'm sure all will be fine.
