Epidural or no epidural?

I am thinking about what I should choose when I go into labor but I have heard there are bad side affects. If you have had one how was your experience? Did you have side affects? Also does it put drugs in the babys body as well?

It does not drug your baby! It's a local anesthetic. I had an epidural and wouldn't go any other way.

I have had 4 epidurals!  I was still able to feel extreme pressure which allowed me to push effectively!!  No side effects!

I had an epidural with my first born and it was awesome.  The nurses told me that it would slow labor but I pushed my daughter out 20 minutes after I got it!  I didn't have any pain meds with my second child and I would never do that again.  My labor was so quick that there wasn't enough time for he epidural.  Everyone is different though!  My good friend gave birth to both of her children with no pain meds by choice.

I am so scared of the needles and my periods are painful anyway. So the contractions were "just" 10 times worse than my painful cramps. The good thing is each contraction only lasts 60 seconds for me.. So i just counted until each of them went away. I lived my natiral birth experience. It helped me push! Good luck to you! :)

I just had my first baby and had an epidural. Everyone's story is different...my epidural hurt like heck when he was putting it in. I hated it. Nobody warned me about that. It was a deep, bone-piercing pain, too, but it hurt less than the contractions! I liked having it because I ended up needing an episiotomy and didn't feel a thing. It made pushing a little bit harder because I just felt pressure, but she still came out with only 45 mins of pushing. :) I still have lower back pain and it could be from the epidural, but there's really no way to know for sure.

I had an epidural and it helped tremendous !!! All you feel are the tightening of when you have a contraction, I've not noticed any pain after

I personally will not get one. I have heard so many horror stories from friends. A couple of them are still having hip and back pain a year after, which might not be related to the epidural but I don't want to risk it. They say the recovery time is a lot faster without one too.
