I want to get my man a promise ring

Not an engagement ring; just a cute little promise ring. I was thinking of getting it with our names and the day we started dating on his. What do y'all think? My mom doesn't like th idea of promise rings because shes like "they're practically engagement rings". But I see them as "I promise myself to you for later"... less as like "I promise myself to you for marriage". So I know if I get him on he'll have to hide it from my mom ::
