Birth Control, unprotected sex and period

So I started taking birth control pills on 4/30 and have had unprotected sex twice since (last week and yesterday) It should be working now right? Is it safe to take the after pill if in doubt? And my period is late, I know it was going to be that way after starting the pill, the ob-gyn told me, but how late is it normally? HELP!!! lol
