Why do you want children?

My husband and I are 32, and I know the clock is ticking, but having kids seems like this awful, expensive, career-destroying thing. I just can't make myself try. Every time I freak out and postpone it. So I'm wondering: why do YOU want a child?.

I used to feel like that and then it just...changed. I don't really know why if I'm honest. I always thought I'd be a mom but I wasn't ready for a long time. All of a sudden I just longed to devote my life to someone else, hubby felt the same way. Instead of gazing longingly at holiday brochures, we'd gaze longingly at parents in the park. 'Travel systems' held more excitement than new cars. I started to think about how my career would fit in with a family and made a few, shrewd, sideways moves at work. We're expecting our first child in August and couldn't be happier. I guess I'd been longing for a change in lifestyle for a while. We'd worked hard for our nice house, cars, holidays and general lifestyle- then we realised we'd rather be at home with a baby on a Saturday night than out at nice restaurants. It sounds silly but getting our dog changed us! We both get so much joy out of 'parenting' our little man. Training him, planning days out and holidays that he can join us on, curling up with him on the sofa instead of going out... I know it is NOT the same but it certainly helped us make the decision that we were ready.

My best friend says she never wants children. I totally support her decision and understand it. What's right for others won't be right for you. However, if you have the slightest doubt then you should explore it.

I've always just wanted to be a mother. Determined to do it better than my mom I guess.

But it's okay if you don't want kids. There's this societal pressure on women to reproduce and often people can make you feel like less of a woman if you don't reproduce. But that's ridiculous.

Not every woman had that drive to mother a child. And that's okay. Stop stressing over what you've been told you should want and enjoy the child free life you actually want.

There's nothing wrong with not wanting children. Don't try to talk yourself into it. You could feel totally different in 3 years. Or maybe you won't. It's all good!

I had my first kid at 18 she is now 16 I'm 35 she is my world it wasn't intentionally but I couldn't imagine like without her now at 35 years old I want to do this all over again lol  I don't think there is ever the "perfect" time you make it work

Natural desire. I agree if you don't want them then that's fine and normal also. I want to experience carrying my own baby inside me, telling people, the delivery, loving and raising them through all the chaos, teaching them and watching them grow up in their own little ways.

I never wanted kids until this past December when I married DH. And he fully supported that. There were so many factors- he has a movement disorder, I work 12-hr shifts, but I have so many family members close by. I didn't want kids until we got married and I guess the wedding cake was tainted bc all of a sudden I got baby-fever..... At age 31.... lol!!

If it's not for you it's not for you.  I've been married for 8 yrs and I felt the same way (scared, worried about career and stability). Even though I felt PLENTY of outside pressure I never let it change my decision because I knew I wasn't ready and didn't want to have a child all those years. All of a sudden 3 months ago I got baby crazy! It's all I want now and all I can think of. Things may change for you or they won't.  don't feel like less of a woman for not getting baby fever.

When I was 25 I was told I would never have kids and it was time to start planning for a hysterectomy, I had severe endometriosis. Well, 9 days later I found out I was pregnant with my daughter. Being her mother has given me a love deeper than any love I have ever known. Watching her grow has brought so much joy into my life and so much reward! She is intelligent and funny and very sassy. I am raising a smart independent woman. And that is the greatest gift I have ever been given. And it's so special that I want to be blessed to be able to raise another child along side her, maybe a couple more of I'm lucky. But being a parent is hard. And it's not for everyone. Re-evaluate your reasons for becoming a parent before you become a parent. Make sure it's something you really want to do!!!!

Me and my scrooge want kids....we love each other and out of our love we want to create a child that can look like me or him. To see our family expand and grow because we made a child together is so full filling to us.

There is nothing wrong with nor wanting or not having children. I'm the same age as you are, and I don't have kids yet. I want them, hopefully in the next couple of years; but it's a big decision. It's not one you should have to talk yourself into. You have a few years yet. Table it, and revisit it later.  As to why I want kids, I feel like I was born to be a mom. Not everyone had that same feeling.  And that's OK.
