I had an abortion about 2 years ago. I realized that, after perfect use of birth control (no missed pills, no contraindicated drugs, same time every day,) that I was pregnant anyway. I have issues with my heart- a valvular defect. Pregnancy would have been life threatening- an already weak heart combined with pregnancy could have led to an aortic dissection, massive stroke, heart attack, or congestive heart failure. I had an abortion at 6 weeks. My husband was with me the whole time, and I remembered being so grateful for the fact that I got to choose life: my own.

I've been asked why I didn't just get sterilized. I'll tell you: because, being (at the time) under 30 and having no kids, I was turned down by doctor after doctor, being told that I would change my mind and regret it when I'm older. My husband inquired about getting a vasectomy, and was told the same thing. We're still trying, 2 years later, to have one of us approved for sterilization.

People have called me all sorts of names, shamed me, tried to make me feel like a horrible person- and words really hurt. Please, even if you don't agree with abortion, even if you have strong feelings- try to be kind. Calling people names or throwing guilt trips out will cause people to shut down. It is very easy to judge when you are not the one making the decision I made.

I got pregnant less than a year into a relationship with my boyfriend because we had sex on my period in between a pack of birth control. His mother hated me for no reason at all and looked for any reason to harass me. So I was ashamed. I'd also just been kicked out of my house by my mom's physically abusive fiance for calling the cops on him when he attacked me so I was trying to finish school and get enough hours in at work to pay my own bills. Right after finding out I was pregnant, my boyfriend told me he was leaving for bootcamp three months early, a week from the day I found out I was pregnant. So a baby was not an additional stressor I needed in my life at that point. I had an abortion and my best friend went with to support me. I don't regret it but that doesn't mean I wanted that to ever happen. It's ruined the joy of pregnancy for me. I ended up marrying my boyfriend when he got home from bootcamp because if an accident like that happens again, I'm not having a second abortion and I'd rather have a decent paycheck, a reliable roof over my head and a real father for the baby.

I feel like it depends on each individual person. Majority will regret it. I had a miscarriage and it destroyed me. That wasn't even truly my decision. And I know a woman who had one and doesn't fully regret it. She knows she had to and that's enough for you. Just make an educated decision, don't ever do something that significant because of fear.

I think most who regret it, wernt in the right mind set. Listening to what others have to say about it, really doesn't help. It's about what is best for you and what's going on in your own life.

Honestly from personally experience the majority don't regret it. I have known a good few women who have had an abortion and don't feel any regret, remorse and it was just a medical procedure. Because let's be honest, that's all that it was.

I have had one. It's not an easy decision to make. I was in a very unstable part of my youth. I have two amazing kids now and at times I imagine having three. You can't go down that road. You have to make peace with your choice and do what's best for you. You will always remember the  date and what happened but you have to do what's best for you. Best of luck.
