Yes. In less than 6 years they will have the option to make much bigger life decisions than their hairstyle. I think it's best to start letting kids become their own person while you can still supervise them. If you restrict their every decision they will sometimes want to rebel just to get a taste of freedom. I would educate the 12 year old on how long it would take for her hair to grow back and if they still want to go through with it and hate it, then you can say I told you so.

I would never not let my kids cut their hair or anything else.. I actually had friends in high school who's parents wouldn't let them cut their hair for a majority of hs and it was so strange. It's just hair and it's their hair, not yours, so why not if that's what they want?

Yes. Isn't that like Junior High age? Kids need to be able to express themselves if you're too strict on hair/clothes you'll end up with someone like me who at almost 30years old has  side of her head shave and the other side is bright red. Lol. And I'm too stubborn to change my appearance now. I actually wear a wig to work in order to keep my hair unique and crazy.

My mom always forced me to get hair cuts. She'd say, "just a trim," and I'd end up with six inches taken off. It pissed me off, and still does thinking about it. 
I hope my daughters like long hair, because I like braiding it and think it's beautiful, but if they don't, I'll let them get whatever haircut they want.

Absolutely! My mom started letting me get my hair cut short at around 9. I have very, very thick hair and it's such a pain to have long hair. If I had a daughter, I'd definitely let her decide when to cut her hair around the same age.
