Home birth experiences??

Question

Does anyone have any experiences with a home birth in the past? Would you do it again or did you feel it was too risky?

You'll get a lot of negativity on here because a lack of education on it and people assume it's dangerous. But when you think about it, the infant mortality rate in hospitals has gone up in the last 3 decades even though the c-section rate has gone up to. Strange! Just educate yourself as much as you can and go wth your gut.

Im in Australian where I believe things are a little diffent regarding home birth and insurance. We must have hospital clearance for a low risk pregnancy and have scans to ensure baby/cord is in a favourable position. I had my heart set on a home birth but my water broke and I didn't progress fast enough (I was given 24 hours from my water braking until I had to go to hospital.)  Unfortunately I had my daughter in hospital, but the procedure still doesn't sit right with me. I would much rather have had her at home and taken my risks. Doing my research now, I know she wasn't in any safer hands being forced out of my body unnaturally.

I'll just say this. When I had my baby, I wanted all of modern medicine within​ arms reach. If something had gone wrong (like his cord being wrapped around his neck twice, which it was), the difference in time between having medical help in the room vs having to call an ambulance could have meant we lost him or didn't. Just my thoughts on it :)

If all goes well we are planning to have a birthing center birth this time around. I would love a home birth but my insurance doesn't cover anything if we do that which blows. Our birthing center is 5 miles from the hospital and our midwifes are required by law to work with a doctor there so if anything does go wrong we will be transported. Plus they have all the basics medical needs at the birthing center except they are not surgeons if a c section is needed. But I am all for home births!

Yes I'd do it over and over and over!!! Did it go as planned? No, nothing ever does really. It was close enough to be what I expected. Except I was in labor for 52 freaking hours!! I'd still do it over again. Way better then being in a hospital room. Hooked up to Machines, getting checked on Constantly. Getting no rest. Having my baby be taken to get "cleaned". My son came out and he hasn't left my arms since. I had planned a water birth, but was too tired in the end and needed to be on a squating chair to have him. I was able to eat and drink (regret not eating, I really should have). All in all wasn't so bad. Will hire a doula next time!

As a nurse such things scare the crap out of me.   The issue in my mind is when things go bad they go VERY bad!!!! My youngest had her cord wrapped multiple times and had I given birth at home there is no doubt in my mind she would not have survived.   I have an OB kit at home JUST Incase as I have had a LOT of kids and anything is possible but I hope to hell I NEVER have to use it.

I'm planning a home birth this birth. Did birth center last time. I'm excited and do not think it's unsafe as I am low risk as most mamas are
