Effaced? Dilated?

Whats "effaced"? And can people really be dilated several weeks before due date? Because im reading both these things on here recently.

Yes you can be a few centimeters dilated for weeks. Dilation really means nothing unless you're having contractions. Effacement is when your cervix starts to thin out.

Some people refer to the stages of the effacement and softening of the uterus like the face. Starting with the hardness of the forehead, then like the cheek, then nose, then lips and then lastly as soft as the earlobe.

Effacement is thinning of the cervix. Cervical checks typically aren't started until 38+ weeks, depending on your office and personal preference.

Yes. For the two pregnancies which they checked my cervix, I have been dialated 6-7cm, 100% effaced for about 2 weeks prior to delivery.
