how early can babies differentiate between people?

When can babies know who's who? Obviously at 5 months she doesn't know I'm mommy or that's grandma. But instinctually does she know?

If her dad only sees her about twice a month, is that a complete stranger to her or no?

Babies recognize voices and at 5 months they can tell by faces she knows you by mommy since she has heard your voice more and longer and also by your heartbeat

Actually,  at 5 months, some definitely know the difference... at 6 months our daughter would go nuts when I would put her in the car seat and say "wanna go see grandma ?"
She could tell Daddy and mommy apart from strangers AND other family.
Every baby is different obviously,  but they can make the difference pretty early.

She knows my moms voice, and she sees her about once a week.

Babies begin to learn their native tongue and the sound of their mothers voice in utero. A baby knows the smell of their own mother's milk. A mothers smell is imprinted on a baby. A baby absolutely recognizes their primary caregiver and becomes attached. A 5 month old baby can recognize their mothers face. My son definitely knew the difference between me, my SO, and anybody else from birth. He's 8 months old and I think it's been the last 2 or so months that he's started recognizing people he sees less often. He sees my sister only a couple times per month but he knows her now. He still doesn't recognize everyone though (or if he does I can't tell).

Both of my children knew that husband and I were different people right away. We could tell mostly because she liked to snuggle with him but not so much with me. Our second, while loving to snuggle with whomever is willing, definitely was able to tell us apart- she was more interactive with me than with him. I think it really depends on the child and their development.

Within weeks baby will recognize the people he or she sees daily and tell them apart from others. By 5 months old, he or she should be able to recognize people he or she sees once a week. Anything longer than once a week visits means it will take about a year or more to recognize and remember that person

They don't fully understand who is who in a family tree type setting until way later for now they will only know who is who based on what name they are taught to call people.
