It's definitely a tricky situation to put yourself in. From my standpoint, I had sex with my ex whom I was still in love with at the time and it actually helped me get over him. I had all these hang ups on how I could never find anyone better and I was still so in love with him, blah blah blah. When we slept together (after we were broken up) I came to a realization that I didn't actually miss him as much as i thought I did. I missed the idea of him and what we had had in the past, not the guy himself. So all in all, I think I made the right choice for myself because I figured out that I actually was moving on and could finally let go. 
Again, my personal experience could be completely different from yours. I think you should do whatever you feel is best for you and for your ex. Good luck! 🍀
