I don't expect it, but a heads up when he is going to be working late or at his best friend's house is always appreciated, so I can plan my own evening out. I do the same for him.

I've come to "expect" (it's more like assume) he'll call me at least once a day while on a trip, but that's because he's always done it. I never once brought asked him do it, he just did it on his own. Most of the time he's busy so he keeps short. For example, "Hey, just calling to say I love you and see how you are doing.... (Tell him how I'm doing) Alright well we are about to head up the canyon so I'll call you tomorrow. Love you!"
