Did anybody marry someone outside of the USA? How long did the process take? What did you both have to do?

I am american. My husband is from Ireland. We met in NYC when he was on a summer holiday. We dated for 3 years going back and forth between Ireland and NYC until we got married.

We filed for a K1 visa. This only applies when the immigrant is still in their home country. It took about 10 months for the visa to be approved and he could enter the country. He received his temporary residency about 7 months after he entered (about 5 months after our wedding). 2 years later he received his permanent residency and about 2 years after that he received his citizenship. This is fairly fast but we were really on top of our game in filing.

You should seek out an immigration lawyer or a non profit immigration service (a lawyer is expensive and often unnecessary. A non profit is just as effective and the cost is much less). It really depends on the country of origin. Ours was a quick(er) process because my husband came from an EU country. Depending on the country of origin it might take longer, he may have to leave to reenter (if he is already residing in the US) and other 'what ifs' that might happen.
