Should insurance pay for??

Question

Do you think health insurance companies should cover infertility treatments? Why or why not? Are there some cases that should be covered and others that shouldn't?

My personal opinion is no, because it's not a medical necessity. They don't cover elective surgeries, so why cover other elective treatments? It's so expensive and not even guaranteed to work.

I have a hard time with this. I was a fertility patient and my insurance didn't cover most things, certainly not IUI and IVF. It did however cover a lot of the meds which helps a bit. I had over 8k in injections in my fridge at one time with just a $75 copay. Insurance can definitely help.

That being said; if my reproductive system isn't working the way it should be working, fixing it could be seen as a coverable expense. It's broken. It needs fixing medically. That's why we have medical insurance. I can see how for many people who see this as elective. However, to a woman who feels her body has betrayed her in doing the function of making babies; the one job the body was literally made to do as a woman, it doesn't feel very elective.

I get it. I see both sides of that coin. I paid for IUI out of pocket and thank goodness didn't need IVF. I think bare mininum though, insurance should cover testing and drugs. Procedures I think are disputable.

No because trying to have a kid isn't necessary. Insurance should be used for necessary medical purposes only.

Mine covers everything at 80%. I don't see any issue with that. 
   
Anecdotal story, and unintended consequence: 
I know at least 10 people personally who were having trouble conceiving and found out they had cancer, or some other serious medical issue through starting infertility appointments. 
   
If the access to that level of care wasn't available, 3 of my friends would never have caught cancer soon enough to save their lives.

Yes and no. No because having kids isnt a necessity, true. Yes because it's fixing a body part that is broken or helping it function properly.  A lot of medical treatments do these two things and most are not guaranteed because there is still so much about the body we don't know.

How is it much different from alots of expensive diagnostic tests to attempt to identify a problem whether there is one or not?

How is it different from expensive medications that attempt to fix a medical problem?

If insurance companies cover medications and surgeries thatvtreat other conditions then yes it should cover infertility treatments.

No. People have a hard enough time getting the surgeries they NEED covered.

When I was 15, I was told that I wouldn't be able to have kids without medical help. I accepted that, and decided that if I couldn't naturally have kids of my own, then I would adopt. I have been lucky enough to concieve two kids without assistance, but I would not be seeking out IVF or other fertility treatments if I didn't. I believe that everything happens for a reason, and if I wasn't supposed to have kids, then I wouldn't have been able to.

My insurance covers infertility treatments, as well as surgeries and medication to change your body to from male to female and vice versa. All insurance policies are different. It really depends on what coverage your employer will want to offer its employees.
