When I first started college the head of the department I'm in told everyone in my year that if they were to get sick that they needed to just focus on getting better and tell their professor that they were sick. And I loved that. Well fast forward three years, and I had my first real sick day just before a midterm for an important class for my major. I had a cyst on my ovary hemorrhage and start bleeding out into my abdomen. It was difficult to walk and sit up because of this. I got a doctors note excusing me from class for 4 days (my exam was the next day so it covered it). I sent the doctors note and an apology to my professor as soon as I got out of the hospital (which I should mention was 9hrs of straight torture thanks to an incompetent nurse who shoved a needle so deep into my arm the plastic part was under my skin). He never responded. The exam came and went and no response. I emailed again. No response. I emailed the assistant Dean of Engineering about the issue and she then emailed him. He finally got back to me and refused to give me a make up saying that in the syllabus it was a no make up policy. So basically he fucked me over for the class and I ended up having to either take no credit (NC) or an F. I really want to write an article about my experience of how my school promises to help students when they are sick only to pull the rug out from under them after and submit it to the school paper. What do you guys think? I feel like my story needs to be addressed and for students to know that their backs aren't really covered.
