Say the relationship was a short one? and you both mutually agreed to break up?

I do not out of respect for the person I'm with and because I wouldn't want him to stay friends with women he slept with.

Not really. I don't get the point of it. Exs get in the way and you'll never be able to be friend friends they're always going to be your ex. I don't fuck with that

Well. My husband now who was my ex at the time, we didnt become friends. We always checked on each other. I was still in love with him and vice versa, i had to break it off with him at the time because of long distance and I wanted to mature a bit before I settled down in a long term relationship. You don't have to be friends, but you can stay civil. You never know what the future holds (:

We stayed friends, lost touch, got back in touch and then I met his wife to be and me and my husband hung out with them, my husband married them and I did photos of the wedding. We would visit on the weekend and it was great until they lost jobs and home. We invitef them to live with us so they could get back on their feet. Two couples cannot live together and now we are no longer friends.

Some. My longest-term ex I dated for almost 4 years - we broke up over 10 years ago now but he's still a good (though geographically distant) friend that I catch up with a couple times a year. I've had a few FWBs that cruised back into "plain old friend" status when we stopped hooking up or started actually seeing other people. Those guys I've sort of stopped talking to when I've been in another serious relationship, not because of hostility but just out of respect. And the one ex I've had who was controlling & manipulative... well, that dude's dead to me. 😁 So I think it's a spectrum - some exes are genuinely good people but it just wasn't right together - no real reason to cut them off since we're all adults & my husband is capable of understanding and not being jealous/insecure. I married *him,* after all.

I'm civil with my ex but we aren't friends and didn't try to be. The relationship was toxic though. My boyfriend and I broke up at one point. We'd been together 8 months and broke up because I was moving away for school. It was mutual in the sense that I knew it was going to happen 3 months in advance and understood his reasons for not being ready for distance.

We tried really hard to stay friends but it didn't work. There were too many feelings between us. It stared out ok for the first month or so but because feelings never went away things got worse and worse. We fought a lot and we'd never fought even when we were together. I can't say for sure because we got back together after 6 months, but if we'd both taken time apart to let go and move on then we probably would've been great as friends.

I have stayed friends with every ex I've had except one. We usually need to take some time to not be friends before being friends though for the strong feelings to dissipate.
