Would this irritate you?

Grandma and grandpa missed baby's first bday and bday party. They are retired and took a trip to Europe when he turned one. Would this bother you? Or should I just move on and forget about it?

Personally it wouldn't bother me. They dedicated their lives to raising their own kids. They deserve to be vacationing and relaxing. I can see where you're coming from since one is a big milestone but I'm sure they will bring back a gift and visit as soon as they're back. They probably care more about being present for birthdays that the child will actually remember.

I'm probably in the minority but I don't really understand the fuss over birthdays. If my parents went to Europe and missed my son's first birthday I'd be thrilled for them to have such an awesome experience. Ultimately it's just one day. It matters more to me that they are awesome parents/grandparents and that they love their grandson every day of the year.

Honestly, I can see how it would irritate me if my parents went away for my daughter's first birthday but we live 33 hours driving away and are flying (3.5 hours) back there for her bday to celebrate. Your baby can celebrate on a different day! Maybe they will bring back some nice European gifts! Try not to be too mad. There will be so many other more important days and events in your baby's life. They won't even remember this one.

My mother in law is missing my daughters first birthday to go to Italy. Her trip was planned after we explicitly asked her which weekends worked for her. We picked the date because it worked for both sets of grandparents and now she's going overseas to spend time with a guy. It's made both me and my husband extremely angry.

My mother has not even sent a text since the baby has been born (9 months). I got a text around 14 weeks pregnant saying congrats. As far as I know, she hasn't asked my siblings about him at all and I'd rather her not in his life if she doesn't truly care. I'm 32, married, financially secure, college educated. I don't understand how she was so excited about my sisters' babies (they were both pregnant as teenagers) and she couldn't give a crap about mine.

Screw it. If it bothers you, talk to them. If they truly care, they'll make an effort. Happy bday to your little one!!

I understand how you might be feeling.  My SO parents missed his birthday & party. This a the second thing they have missed involving my son. They missed his christening as well.  They gave no excuse other than they didn't feel like driving 45 mins to attend.
