Does anyone know if the bumbo seat helps baby learn how to sit up?

There is quite a bit of controversy over it actually. Some mom's swear by it, a lot of physical therapists highly dislike. I never owned one myself, I opted for things like an exersaucer and floor mats, which allowed my LO to move around freely.  If I really need her in one spot I'd place her in the highchair (or when a newborn, in a carrier). She was sitting up by 3-4 months and crawling at 7. I think if you do your research and use it at the right time it could be beneficial but (most) babies eventually learn how to sit, regardless.

My doctor didn't recommend it also my daughter's thighs are cute little chubby ones and friends of mine told me that their son couldn't get his thighs through it so I opted for the Sit Me Up instead... it was recommended by our pedestrian as a more natural choice for spine and back development and my daughter loved it! She was sitting in it at 2.5 months and sitting on her own at almost 5 months unsupported! I would recommend it over the bumbo (although I never actually tried the bumbo) but to each their own!

As Tiffany said there is some controversy around it. In addition to the physical aspect, I think part of the problem is that it's used as baby day care and some people think they should never ever put your child down lol. 
I had avoided getting one because the physical therapist objections I had read, as well, but by three months my son is loving being in a seated position so much that he cries if he's laid down. I broke down and got him the mamas and papas  one with a tray and some toys and he's in heaven. I really like this one because it has a removable foam insert for when he grows foam insert for when he grows. It's also helping him work on his core muscles and I've seen an improvement in only a week. I helped him to buy sitting him on the floor but I can't do that every second of the day.

I used one and my baby still learned how to sit up at 4.5 months on her own. As long as they're not in it all day.... it's fine.

I think it helped my daughter. She was really young when she started sitting in her bumbo I don't remember how old but she was sitting on her own really early.
