After abortion check up question

Please no anti abortion people. Unfortunately I had to get an abortion about 5 1/2 weeks ago. Totally broke my heart to do it. They said I should get a check up by now to make sure everything's alright. I was 20 weeks according to the clinic I went to. I got my period this week for the first time since, it's heavier than normal but not crazy. Cramps are there but not horrible. It seems like a relatively normal period. How important is it that I get a check up? I'm homeless and have no money and already owe my doctor like $400.  That's why I had to do the abortion in the first place.
