Can u start birth control at any time?

Ok so this is just a silly question.. Can u just start birth control any time of the month? Like for example, today is the 14 and if I wanted to go on birth control would I hav to wait till the end or beginning of the month? Or it really doesn't matter as long as u take it everyday
