Listened to a great Pregtastic podcast episode about this with a safe sleep specialist. They said not to add any extra padding to any basinette or crib mattresses b/c that can cause suffocation risk by making areas their little nose can get stuck between the mattress and the frame. Yes. 1 inch is fine. When doing research everything I read said a thin, firm mattress is standard and approved by safety guidelines. People who add comfort pads or double the mattress increase the risk for SIDS. Just because it's hard to us, doesn't mean it's miserable for baby like we would think.
