How do you use a breast pump?

Question

I'm due in August and I'm desperately praying I'm able to breastfeed but on the side I also want to be able to pump milk.

Truth is though I have no idea when to pump or how many times!

For example, I'll breastfeed and than what? When do I take the time to pump milk?

Do I do it in between feedings or?

To avoid an oversupply and many health issues (mastitis, clogged ducts, etc) you shouldn't pump until baby is 6 weeks old when your supply is regulated. Most women have the highest milk output in the morning. Always feed baby first & pump after! And remember you never run out of milk, it works as a supply & demand. The more you nurse and/or pump, the more you'll produce.

The best time to pump is after baby has nursed (at least in my experience), so you don't interfere with a natural feeding, and you keep your supply at least where baby needs it. Personally I prefer manual over automatic, start with quick short pumps until it starts flowing, then you can do longer held pumps/squeezes.

You need to meet with a lactation consultant or ask all these questions to the lactation consultants in the hospital.  Most hospitals also have free breastfeeding support groups you can go to.

Also curious about this! Like.. if he eats, what's left to pump? But if i pump and want to store it.. when can he eat?! It's hard to ask google these things lol.
