Not Mormon, Living in Utah?

Question

My husband and I live in Arizona, and hate it here. We're considering moving to Utah, but when I brought up the idea to my mom, she expressed some concerns about us being isolated or even shunned because we are not LDS. We will have a child in first grade when we move, and I don't want them having difficulties being shunned by classmates. So, what is it really like living in Utah as non-LDS? It would be close to Salt Lake City, maybe around Tooele. Thank you in advance!

I live about 2 hrs from Salt Lake in a very small mormon community. I hate it here! My neighbors have NOTHING to do with my family!! It's sad!

Just.... no. Your mom was right. It’s nothing but judging, fake sweetness, pressure to join Mormonism, and no real social anything other than in the church. If you have kids, they will feel different and isolated at school and I’m your neighborhood. The only way to meet people is at church. These problems are especially bad in Utah County——specifically Provo! It’s rlly hard to be happy hear even if you are a Mormon sometimes. Plus, Mormons in other places can be amazing people but in Utah they are particularly snobbish and judge. Take it from someone who’s lived there for a long time.

I live in Utah and it really depends on where you live. I would recommend living in downtown SLC or Sugarhouse because the Mormon population is actually really low and they are much more liberal. I would stay away from Utah county and cities like Provo. Overall it's not a bad place to live. The job market and economy are very stron.  The people are generally really nice and not as stereotypical as you'd think.

Born and raised here. I definitely advise you to live in slc or slc county. I would not recommend living in Utah county at all. And I wouldn't recommend Davis county or anything north or slc. If you have questions feel free to ask.

Positive note, our economy is great our housing market is a buyers market right now and we have jobs! It's a nice state to live in just gotta get past some of the people.

It all depends on your life style to be honest. If you like to go to bars or have a huge night life utah is not it. But if you are big into the outdoors it is awesome here. I have lived in Utah almost my whole life and never was I shunned for not being lds. And some communities are worse and others are not so bad so it just depends. I've been there, its beautiful there. But being so close to salt lake city and with the huge mormon population it might be harder for you all to make friends. Im sure there has to be groups of some kind that aren't LDS.

My ex was from Utah. SLC he said was a bit more relaxed... but overall he hated it. He said if you werent mormon it was hard to get a job. They judge you based on whether you share their religion and the mormons run Everything in that state. I know some mormons personally who are really great people so I'm not saying all the mormons there are jerks. But it IS a mormon ran state and anything that is against their religion will not be accepted. I.E. Gambling
