Joint account?

Question

My fiancé & I have been together for 2 years, I'm due in 4 months  & we're getting married next month.  I felt like he spends alot of money on  unnecessary "toys" it might not be a problem now, but with the baby coming & our marriage life starting, I really think that he should slow down on some things. I explained my point to him and he agreed on getting a joint account in which we will be saving some money on the side. Some of my friends say it's too soon, some of his friends think that im using this opportunity to take advantage of him. Do you guys think I should go on, or wait?

If he's not financially responsible with his money now, I certainly wouldn't share my money with him. He needs to show you that he can control his spending all by himself before you guys get a joint account.  In my opinion. .....

I think a joint account for bills & expenses & savings but also have separate accounts for extra money. As long as what needs to be covered in the joint account is, then there should be no say in how the other spends their extra money as long as it's not hurting anyone

My fiancé isn't that great with money. If he had a bank card he'll spend way to much. We put all the money in one account and only I have a card. It just works best that way. I'm not super controlling but money is tight and if he goes into a store he will spend money on the most ridiculous pointless things. He has no idea what a budget is.  We both agree this is best.

I'd do a joint savings account but I wouldn't merge our pay checks into one chequing account. Keep your finances separate with individual accounts but for savings I would try out a joint account. If he can't handle having that money there and not touching it; shut it down quick!

It's not too soon to have a joint account. I would get one now and wait until the marriage to actually start using it though. As for you taking advantage of him, that's crazy. I might be concerned the other way of him having access to more money than usual to go spending Willy nilly. Maybe his friends know something you don't, and he has more money than you think? If he really has tons of money to blow, maybe toys are ok. But he does need to cool it with the toys until baby has all it could need.

Myself and my partner have a joint account - I deal with the outgoings and spending ... so we sort the bills first and then we put What we can into savings and whatever is left we split down the middle and we have an amount each weekly ... then it's fair and once it's gone it's gone so if he wants to save his half and not spend any for the month to get a "new toy" then he can ! I normally use mine for bits of make up or I will save up to get something abit more expensive .. we always put £100 into a share box also so we can have at least 1 or 2 date nights ... just works better for us x

A marriage without shared money isn't a marriage at all. That's a roommate. If he isn't responsible with his finances you shouldn't marry him at all. You need to communitcate and work towards short term and long term goals together all of which need to be discussed before you say I do!

You are having a baby together! You should definitely have a joint account for baby expenses at least. If your husband agrees, it doesn't hurt to try it out.
