Do I NEED condoms with birth control?

My mom is really good at invading my privacy 🙃 and I have struggled to talk to her about things like this for that reason. I am 18 years old, I've been in the same (healthy) relationship for three years now and we waited just over two years to have sex for the first time, and when I told my mom about it, she couldn't say anything other than tell me how irresponsible I am. We just got in a very intense argument because I want to be on the pill rather than strictly rely on condoms. She told me that even if I am on the pill, I will need to still use condoms and the pill should strictly be used as a back-up.

Is this true? I obviously don't want to get pregnant but I am having trouble finding a condom that doesn't cause a lot of irritation, and I thought this was our solution. I could really use any input. Thank you!
