cultural appropriation
I've been seeing a lot of posts here about cultural appropriation. I've seen someone say Kylie Jenner can't wear/sell camo bikinis because Beyoncé wore them first. I hate Kylie but that seems a little too far to the left to me.
Kylie is just an awful human being in general so we shouldn't use her as an example because most of us are biased against her. But let's just use any other random celebrity. If a white girl can't wear braids, why can black women straighten their hair? Why can't white women wear hoops? But women of color can wear jewelry that was commonly worn by white women, for instance, diamond engagement rings, which originated in Austria. Married women first wore rings In Rome, but not diamonds.
This isn't an issue of racism in my mind. I'm not racist and am a minority myself. I feel like the hypersensitivity has made certain causes less credible. People just roll their eyes and don't take race issues seriously when they're told "you don't get to, but I do."
I've seen a lot of women on this app say things like "I just can't even handle white people." Or "white people are the worst." You have to imagine how that sounds to people. Some of us are trying to unite one another, not further divide. Some of us want equality and the way to achieve that is not to stomp someone else down to lift yourself up. Isn't that the exact thing white people did and still do to POC?
Why can't we call out cultrual appropriation when it's legitimate, but leave the trivial things like hoop earrings and camo bikinis alone? A white woman wearing an Afro is appropriation. A white woman wearing hoop earrings? Not so much.
I know everyone is going to accuse this post of being racist, veiled in hate and ignorance but this is literally just a call for everyone to just stop and take a minute to think about what we accomplish when we accuse a woman of cultural appropriation for wearing hoops. I don't think people learn this way. I don't think ignorant people will become enlightened by this behavior and I think it fuels a systemic "us vs them" mentality. That mentality is acceptable against actual suprematists. But against a teenager who put her hair in braids because she thought it was cute? What are we accomplishing by doing that? We're further alienating other cultures and communities. We aren't teaching anyone anything. What are we accomplishing by saying "white people tho..."? We're again, alienating ourselves and them. This might be the best time in history to fight this cause. Millennials are growing up and are the most progressive generation in history. We don't even flinch when we see interracial couples. Things are getting better in many parts of the country. We can fight against police brutality without taking it out on a little white boy who says he wants to be a rapper when he grows up.
Please be respectful in your responses. I was respectful and thoughtful when writing this. I believe racism is a serious and systemic issue in America. It's inherent in most people. Im a supporter of BLM. I fight for equality for all races, genders, sexualities and humans in general. But I'm also aware of how well meaning people and good intentions sometimes are wrongly perceived, fueling the fire. And that goes for both sides. When white people say all lives matter, I don't believe every single one of them are racists. I just believe they're idiots and they don't consider how that phrase is perceived by people who are truly suffering and being murdered by police officers. But talking about that is a separate issue.
I believe if we want to happily coexist, if we want to keep progressing and eventually reach a place of true equality we all have deliver clear, reasonable messages and expectations. We have to love ourselves and each other.
