Why is this an assumption?

Why do people think or believe that your dreams or ambitions suddenly must stop when you have kids? Iv run into this a few different times and it bothers me that ppl think this way

It isn't that they must stop, it is that they become MUCH harder to follow through with.  Esspecially while they are babes, children take a lot of attention and time (and they like to help).  So while you can have your dreams and try to chase them if you have children you will find it a lot harder to succeed.

I'm not sure why people think this.  I had my first child at 21 and people kept telling me that my life was over,  I was just too young according to them.  I didn't understand it then, 12 years later I still don't get it. Now that my hubby and I are trying I hear the same stuff.  It's ridiculous.

No one knows what you are capable of but you. Life certainly doesn't end when you have children!

Traveling has always been my passion. People who don't know me said I'd have to stop once I had kids. But they just didn't know what I (or my little one) were capable of.  Since my daughter was born I've had a great new travel buddy! She's 3 and has been to 10 countries with me. Some of that was just the two of us. It was actually easier when she was a newborn - I could just strap her in the baby carrier and go.

Another awesome thing is that some children can actually be incredibly helpful and supportive of your dreams and goals. My little one is incredibly encouraging - more than a lot of friends I've had in the past.

If you want something, don't let any negative naysayers or anything stop you! No one knows what you are capable of other than you!

I was pissed when my grandparents acted like I couldn't go get my masters and phd after having a baby. I was like people do that all the time, why would I be different? I have friends that have multiple kids that have better social lives than I do and that doesn't stop them from doing anything.

They are generalizing. It is a fact however that having kids involvs more work and a life balance. As a result you can't attain goals as fast with kids. Someone has to watch them for you to go to grad school or work overtime for a possible promotion etc...

That's what they mean. Kids don't prevent growth it just can take longer to get that goal! Don't worry about them and show them that you have progressed regardless of kids!!
