swaddling?

I'm so confused by swaddling! When I was pregnant with my first it was a huge no-no and could cause SIDS but now I see everybody recommending swaddling? Is this a US thing or has anybody in the U.K. been advised to swaddle? So confused 🙈

I swaddled my first until she was about 3-4 months. They say to stop swaddling when they are able to turn themselves side to side. Swaddling was the only thing that would calm her down when she had one of her episodes. I plan on swaddling my second as well.

My 2 completely hated being swaddled so I never did it. My 1st, the 1st night she was home, I swaddled her and laid her in her crib. When she woke to eat, I go to get her and it was like when a butterfly leaves a cocoon. Her night outfit that buttoned up, and the blanket I swaddled her in were still in perfect condition like a cocoon like she was still in them, and she was in her diaper, at the bottom of the bed. I wish wish wish I would have had a video monitor to see just how in the hell she had managed that at seriously 3 days old. She had to somehow shimmy herself up out the top and slide down somehow a foot away from her swaddle cocoon. She will be turning 9 in October. I wonder if it was an omen because she's terribly creative and sneaky.

There is a blanket called The Miracle Blanket. It's a swaddling blanket worth every penny if you do plan to swaddle. My son loved being swaddled and slept so much better with this swaddle blanket. I usually could never get the swaddle correct with a regular swaddling blanket and he'd get fussy and get out of it. This blanket really did wonders. Will be swaddling my daughter with it as well from day one.

All my friends back home in the US talk about swaddling. I currently live in France, and it seems like the big thing is using sleep bags. Even maternities put it on the list of things to bring to the hospital. We're going to just go this route as well.

I know that a lot of people are big on swaddling, but I'm really just looking for advise on whether or not there's been further research since I had my first little girl 5 years ago and whether it's now recommended by midwives. :) thanks for your responses.
