How long can a child be breastfed? (years, months)

With my first I only wanted to breastfeed for 3-4 months but I loved it so much I continued until he self weaned at 9 months abruptly. I wasn't able to pump enough for him and lost my supply quickly :( I think I could have went much longer if he didn't wean. I only breastfed my second for a week and gave up due to too much pain from tongue tie and no doctor would fix it here. My daughter is now 3 months old and I plan to breastfeed for at least a year and if I can convince my husband I will go longer. He's not as supportive of breastfeeding and thinks it's gross when a child is walking and looks for the breast. This is my last baby though and I want to savour every last moment of it.

It's a personal choice on when you stop. It's all down to what you feel comfy with and what's best for you and your child's life.

I personally will breastfeed exclusively Untill she is 6 months then introduce food and give upto 3 feeds a day (morning, nap time and bedtime) till she is 1 year old, tops 18 months after that I will just give cows milk or formula that is designed for her age group.

The world health organization recommend breastfeeding until she 2 and then until mutually agree upon between parent and child. The average age a human baby naturally self weans is between 4-7 years of age. My daughter is 3 and son is 15 months they are both still breastfeeding every few hours, I donot limit how much or often then can nurse and am allowing them to self wean whenever they are ready to do so. Extended breastfeeding has a plethora of benefits and is better than feeding your child another mammals milk.

The recommandations from the healthdepartment in norway is to full nurse to 6 months, then introduce food, and countinue to nurse to about 12 months. Then most kids wean them selfes, or start kindergarden. If you can continue, good 😄

There is no limit, but common sense is a good idea. A six- year old should not get access to mommys breasts in my opinion 😊
