Milk Coming In?

Hello, I had my baby 2 days ago and I don't think my milk has come in. She did so good latching at the hospital but now she struggles so much. She was so upset last night so I fed her a little formula to see if she was hungry and she chugged it down like I was starving her. My lactation consultants were awful in the hospital and I'm a first time mom terrified of hurting my baby. What can I do to get my milk to come in?

Milk usually comes in on the third or fourth day. Keep latching her as much as she wants. Do the cluster feeding. She will want to continually feed. It is not that she is starving! She is stimulating your breast to produce milk. Keep at it and you should see your milk in a couple days. Also, keep in mind that a newborn baby has a stomach the size of a marble. It grows quickly in the first week or two, but she is getting enough. If she isn't back to birth weight by the second week, you may need to worry then. Also, ask the pediatrician if you are concerned.

Babies usually cluster feed the 2nd day to stimulate milk supply. Your milk will come in in a day or two. Put the baby on the breast on demand. As long as baby is producing wet diapers, they are ok.

Meet with a board certified LC asap so you can get help for the two of you.
A syringe or dropper is recommended to be used instead of a bottle this early as baby can get bottle preference so quick it would surprise you.
Lots of skin to skin helps encourage her to latch and different holds may help. Football is good in the beginning.

Don't give up Momma! Milk takes a couple of days to come in. I think mine came in on the fourth day. Baby might be hungry, but her continued latching will help bring it in. Don't be afraid to go to another lactation consultant too! My daughter and I did great in the hospital, and the first day or two at home and then it went downhill. My husband made us an appointment right away and that lactation consultant did a great job in helping out! She gave us different positions to try and she gave me lots of advice to get rid of the pain. The first few weeks are definitely rough, but it does get so much easier! Never be afraid to ask for help! My girl will be 9 months next week and we're still going strong!

Mine didn't come in until the 4th day. They had me pump every 3 hours to get stimulated. He had trouble latching and I just found it hard to try to mess with. So I wanted to stick to pumping and give him a bottle. I planned on giving him formula in a few weeks anyways so he's use to it when I'm off leave, but I started giving it to him at the hospital since he was hungry. While I still pumped. And I'd just switch between breast milk and formula or mix it depending how much I produced. So I'd pump every 3 hours and find a consultant outside of the hospital.
