There is nothing wrong about pushing a healthy lifestyle and teaching your children about exercise and diet. There is a fine line between helping your child and ruining their self esteem. You have to be super careful about how you word things and come across to your children.

This is a very sensitive thing to bring up, to anyone really!

As a parent, you want your children to be the healthiest they can be. With that said, if you see your child is becoming overweight-- not by magazine standard, but medically speaking-- I do believe it's the parents duty to talk to their child about it in a loving way that doesn't make them feel judged or hurt. It seems almost like an impossible task, but I wouldn't want my child to suffer from heart or respiratory issues or diabetes because I was too scared to talk to them.

But again, it's a very sensitive topic and shouldn't be done like "hey sally, looking a bit chubby lately. Here's a salad." No one should be spoken to that way!

when i was around 12 i was a little chunky. my mom would make fun of me and call me fat, so i stopped eating. i developed anorexia because of her constantly making fun of me and calling me fat. then after i lost 20+ lbs she started making fun of me for being too skinny & being anorexic. i wish she wouldve just offered me healthier food and a more active lifestyle

My daughter is a little fluffy. She is almost 12 and going through that slight chubby and awkward stage before puberty. We talk about healthy eating choices and healthy exercises. I would never tell her she's over weight. If I destroy her self esteem she won't come to me with issues and trust me in the future. Society will give her enough negative feedback and my job is to do exactly what I'm doing and stay positive.

I would absolutely want my mum to tell me if I was putting on weight / overweight. And she has! Throughout my life advocated a healthy lifestyle. She's also told me when I've been too skinny, if my hair is shit, if my hair is good and reassured me that my body is completely normal throughout my pregnancy. It's hard to hear these things, it's upsetting etc but she's my mum and if she can't tell me then who will?? It's coming from a good place.

I think it's rude for anyone to tell you that you need to loose weight. I would be more concerned as to why you were gaining weight. Stress? Bad habits? Depressed?
