Are biotin supplements for real?

There's all kinds of controversy over vitamins and supplements and if they even work.
Has anyone found that the use of biotin pills for hair/nails improved anything for them?

My teacher recommended biotin for me because my hair takes forever to grow and my nails are paper thin. It surprisingly improved both for me! My hair grew pretty fast within like 3 months! I loved it! Need to get me a new bottle soon.

I don't think there's any real scientific evidence supporting them. The placebo affect is real...when you start taking biotin you are more likely to be trying to be healthier in other ways as well, eating more veggies, washing your hair less, etc. 
I'd save your money and just eat right...but I'm a skeptic
