What did we do wrong? Help!

So my boyfriend and I have been dating for almost two years, and last night we finally TRIED to have sex for the first time. It was really romantic and perfect up until we got the condom out. First of all, he put it on inside out so there was no lubricant on the outside. Then, he couldn't figure out how to enter me. We didn't even end up having sex. Things got so technical with the condom and everything that the romance evaporated and he went soft. If it had worked out, we would have both lost our virginity last night, but we didn't. It was a disaster.

How do you keep things romantic while putting the condom on?

What's the best thing to do when he can't figure out where to enter me?
