How often do you take pain meds for menstrual cramps?

My cramps range from moderate to severe. I try not to take pain killers or any other types of meds for it unless I'm in excruciating pain. Sometimes I'm in a lot of pain but I just let it pass because I don't want to harm my body by taking too much medications.
